Parenting an adult with Down syndrome can come with unique challenges and joys. In this video, we'll discuss tips and strategies for supporting and caring for your loved one with Down syndrome as they navigate adulthood.
I hope you enjoy my interview with Wendy and Matt.
Born with an extra chromosome, Matt is a young man who thrives on making others happy. His love for music and movie quotes are the tools he uses to entertain those around him. He may even show off his amazing dancing skills if you're lucky enough to catch him on a really good day.
Matt faces numerous obstacles, but he works hard to get past them with his family's support.
Quitting is not an option…most of the time. His challenges teach others to appreciate their abilities.
Matt holds a green belt in Kenpo Karate, too many colorful ribbons and medals from Special Olympics to count, and is an avid bowler who owns a bowling ball that has seen many a strike.
Matt is a #1 fan of Disney and Marvel. HE is a superhero and a magician. When faced with an
uncomfortable circumstance, he uses his magic to save the day.
Matt puts the Hoot in Hooton
Wendy Hooton is a #1 International Best-Selling Author, Speaker, and Down Syndrome Advocate.
She just released her book "Big People Don’t Pee in the Park - A Mother and Son’s Journey with Down Syndrome" in October which became a #1 International Best Seller. Through healing, hope, and humor, Wendy shares her journey of her son’s unexpected Down syndrome diagnosis when she gave birth at the age of twenty-three. Motivated to share their story, she hopes to help parents move beyond the shock and fear they might experience after learning of their newborns' unexpected prognosis while offering them a window into the incredible life they will have. Her goal: by sharing her thirty-three years of lived expertise, she hopes to create a dynamic space of connection and provide resources to help others.
Wendy is also committed to helping society see the worth of people who are differently abled.
The day Wendy became a mom she also became a teacher, a student, and a warrior. She’s fun, motivated, dedicated, and fearless, which may be what qualified her for the position. When she is not lost in her writing, or soaking up words written by other authors, Wendy enjoys spending time with her family and friends on adventurous road trips, at a beach, or driving through the majestic Utah mountains. Her favorite activity, though, is being entertained by her hilarious son.
